The variable adaptor main section has a 62mm thread
for attaching accessory wide angle lenses. It then has a moving
outer sleeve with the 72mm thread. The outer sleeve will extend
out so you can go to full zoom with a 72mm filter attached with out
the camera lens hitting the filter. If you go to full wide angle with
the adaptor extended there is vignetting.
You can pull the adaptor back to eliminate the vignetting.
The Variable adaptor can also be used as a lens hood. It works well with a CP8800-58mm adaptor and 58mm UV filter. A 72mm lens cap on the variable adaptor should be used.
